Evaluation

This project has become too complicated, and ventures into areas of design outside my areas of expertise. The project has veered towards packaging design and paper engineering, whic is not my forte, There is too much risk involved in carrying on down this path, the possibility of it going wrong when completing is too. So i will drop the idea of incorporating the cube with into the publication and them both being the same thing. BUT.... I do like the concept of using a cube as a showcase or display, instead of a poster.

So I will split the two elements apart from each other. And keep the cube as an added extra for the publication, as apposed to a poster.

The publication  will take the form of a standard publiaction with pages etc. scale and form are yet to be decided.

NOTES

The cube could form the packaging for a zine, or equivalent.

Content?

What would you want to know about the code?

   - History
   - Use
   - Design : reasons for form.

Possible Sources for content?

   - war stories where morse code came in useful.

Research Directions:

-Bletchley Park

CUBE MOCKUP

This is a mock up of the publication at 210mm cubed using the available paper from digital print.

For the publication to be dual use as both a publication and 3d Display stand, it must be able to condense down and fold together. This means the paper must be both thick enough to become solid when constructed but also thin enough to fold together cleanly.

The tabs are also a problem, they do not fit with the publication aspect of the project. They interfere when folding and clutter the page. It looks to much like a net and not enough like a publication.

QUESTIONS...

Has the project become overdesigned? Does it need to simplify?

Should the publication be separate to the box?

Should the publication be packaged in the box?

CUBE 210X210

With this the tab the corners are solid. The tab injects into the other tab, causing it to interlock.

This tab isnt really working, it loses its solidity when scaled up to actual size.

The Tabs work like this when they're shortened, it stops the bending in the larger tabs. It also cuts down on paper usage. The tabs still need some sort of clipping device so that the tabs stay attached to the cube.

I need to try more tabbing techniques at this size.

The box is quite difficult to construct, I need to fins ways of making it difficult.

CUBE : internal 3D

I have to remember to think about how the publication will look from a 3D angle. This could add an extra dimension to the publication.

CUBE:BIGGER TABS

The Bigger tabs give the cube more stability. But they still need refining. They also need testing on a larger scale, I need to see what the largest I can make while still retaining stability.
